Recognizing market potential within the local Hispanic community, the Richmond Retail Merchants Association recently invited Lisa Zajur, director of the Spanish Academy & Cultural Institute in Midlothian to speak to its members. Zajur focused her talk on how merchants could gain the trust of Hispanic customers, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. She emphasized the importance of family within Hispanic communities, and used Western Union as an example of a marketing success. In English, the company’s slogan is, "The smarter way to send money." In Spanish, however, the company uses the slogan "We are here to help you keep your promise," highlighting the importance of family relationships.

“In the Heights,” a salsa-filled spectacle about Latino immigrants living in Manhattan’s Washington Heights, won the prestigious Tony Award for Best Musical in New York last week.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain will give a keynote address at the League’s annual National Convention, to be held July 7 – 12 in Washington, D.C.

The United States has called home its ambassador to Bolivia in the wake of violent protests in La Paz, The Associated Press reported. The protesters outside the U.S. embassy were demanding that the United States extradite a former Bolivian defense minister responsible for a military crackdown that killed 60 people during riots in 2003.
As Argentine farmers marked 100 days on strike, thousands of citizens demonstrated around the country, calling for the government to resume talks with the farmers and put an end to the strikes, the Associated Press reported. The farmers first went on strike in March after President Kristina Fernandez de Kirchner raised export taxes on grains.
