Take the Journey with Mary & Joseph

Rooted in Spaniard traditions introduced to Mexico by Roman Catholic Priests, Las Posadas celebrate the travels of Mary and Joseph and expectant birth of Jesus for nine days from December 16 to the 24. Houses of the congregants are visited with statues or live participants representing Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem. The purpose of the journey is to symbolize the refusal of a resting place along the route. The Catholic traditions continued by many Mexicans and South Americans include a variety of happens including reciting the rosary and candlelight prayers and many dressed as Magi’s, shepherds etc. Each nine-day event, dependent on host, varied traditions of children’s games and cultural foods occur.

Posadas are usually held at predetermined homes of congregants. Though seven of the nine evenings of Posadas for Holy Trinity have been held in private homes, the evening of December 24th is open to the public at their facility located at 155 West Government Avenue in Norfolk Virginia. You’ll find Mary, Joseph, and the Magi’s waiting in traditional attire. See church website for travel information www.trinitynorfolk.org .
