Radio-thon Shines Promesa y Esperanza on Pediatric Cancer
With the help of bilingual volunteers, Selecta 1050 AM WVXX and Davidson Media Group (DMG) stations raised over $20,000 in donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. The two day event October 9th – 10th, 2008, “Promesa y Esperanza”(Promise and Hope), focusing on the Hispanic community, not only helped to garner donations from it’s listeners but also provided public awareness of how St. Jude’s has touched so many lives.
Stories from patients who have experienced the care and lifesaving efforts of St. Jude’s cancer clinics came alive over the airwaves. A true testament to St. Jude’s success in increasing the survival rates for childhood cancers. Caring for patients in all of the U.S. and the world St. Jude’s efforts to reach the Hispanic community are evident in its 8 cancer clinics located throughout Latin America.
Audiences in Virginia Beach, Charlotte, Providence, and Kansas City were able to listen to the radio-thon live. The support of sponsors included BB&T Bank, Moneygram, Goodwill Industries, Colonna’s Shipyard, Trade Team and Hardees.
Dave Bowling, General Sales Manager for Selecta 1050 says, “the response from the Hispanic community was unbelievable. Over 60% of the donors signed up for a monthly donation for a year; which I thought was pretty cool.”
With the success of Selecta’s first radio-thon, Bowling is already planning next year’s event.
