Where is Our Latin Community in Hampton Roads?
by IRM
Are you in search of a local Latin community where the Spanish language, culture, and custom flourish? If you answered affirmative, take a look at Our Latin Community for you and your family in Hampton Roads.
“Our Latin Community is not just the name of another local cultural group, it is a movement,” Group Organizer Phoebe Sanyer stated. “We’re growing stronger each day. Joining our group you can network with some great people here in the Hampton Roads community.”
Of Puerto Rican and Belizean parentage, Phoebe Sanyer knows about growing stronger. A seven-year Navy veteran, she and associate run the Norfolk Boot Camp, an all-year outdoor fitness program. As a fitness instructor and Navy vet, being a leader to the group is a task she takes seriously. Sanyer commits leadership to Our Latin Community with all her vigor and passion. She believes that the group can make a positive impact throughout all the cities of Hampton Roads.
Established in 2008, the group filled a need voiced by some local Hispanics. Members are a mix of professionals, stay-at-home moms, military, business owners, working moms, and college students trying to keep the Latino culture relevant and alive in their own backyard.
“We all know what it’s like to feel disconnected from your own people and culture when you’re in a new environment. The truth is that the Hispanic community is here in Hampton Roads. It just takes a little more effort to find it,” Sanyer shared.
Safe, social, and family activity is a must for the Group Organizer and two Assistant Organizers. “Please do not confuse our purpose. We are not a dating service but a family-focused group” is a common reminder to anyone inquiring of membership. Cultural education and maintenance of support networks for Hispanics in the area are clear goals. Future plans include “Mami Spa Day” and more kid activities. The group invites families, regardless of culture or tongue, to join them for fun networking and developing of new friendships.
The majority of group members, 88 presently, are second and third generation bilinguals interested in maintaining the Spanish tongue for themselves and their children. Group interactions have included: adult dance socials, holiday parties, afternoon family movies, playground play dates, and Latin festivals. The Mambo Room, De Rican Chef, Jumping Jelly Bean, and Macarthur Mall are some of the member’s favorite spots.
“We’ve had some fun karaoke singing events and unforgettable beach picnics too,” Sanyer recalls.
