Norfolk, Newport News Police Departments Host Outreach Event

By Caroline Stauffer

"We want people to know that the police are on their side," said Juvenal Valdez, Hispanic Resource Officer with the Norfolk Police Department. "We aren't there to round up people and deport them."

In an effort to strengthen relations with the Hispanic community, the Newport News and Norfolk Police Departments are holding a community soccer tournament Saturday, May 31, at Riverview Farm Park in Newport News. The community is invited to join the police officers in three 30 minute games, the emphasis being on fun rather than competition. Bands Essencia and Golpe de la Sierra will provide musical entertainment.

Valdez expects between 300 and 500 people, in addition to some 20 Norfolk police officers and even more officers from Newport News. The event kicks off at 3 p.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. The park is located at 105 City Farm Road, off exit 255 A.

Juvenal Valdez hopes that after a fun and relaxing afternoon of soccer and music, the Hispanic community will feel comfortable calling the police when they need help. Another tournament is planned for Saturday, June 28.
