Fidel Castro Resigns
After 49 years, Cuba's leftist leader resigns. Announcing his resignation through the an online letter published in Cuba's newspaper "Granma" late last night.
The ailing president had spent the last 19 months out of the public eye due to health issues and many had speculated his death. His brother Raul has been publically named as his successor. According to CNN, U.S. President Bush hopes that Fidel's resignation opens up Cuba to a "democratic transition."
There were no rallies or gatherings reported since Castro's announcement.
