Los Heavy Duty de Hampton Roads" braved the heat and played a spirited soccer game against "Los Pistoleros" of the Norfolk Police Department Saturday afternoon. They later took on the Newport News Police Department during the June 27 event at Norfolk's Lake Taylor High School. The soccer tournament, the second such event sponsored by the police departments this summer, also featured live music and Latin food. The police departments strive to build positive relationships with the Hispanic communities of Hampton Roads by holding community outreach events.

That a rigorous practice combining dance and martial arts exercised to songs sung in Portuguese with roots that are deeply African has taken off in Hampton Roads may seem surprising. Yet Capoeira is indeed achieving popularity across the Seven Cities, and booming around the world. “There is a big flood of people seeking Capoeira right now,” said Michael Jordan, who teaches Capoeira Angola at the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk.

Jul-14-2008 Peer pressure can happen at any age. Children and adolescents are not the only ones who can fall victim to the perils of peer pressure; life as an adult can be just as difficult. Certain things do not change no matter how much we mature. Wanting to be accepted in the eyes of others is not all that uncommon and is not necessarily unhealthy unless a person allows this desire to interfere with his or her true self.
